How to make channels on Discord

Dark cover with a stack of channel rows and one row outlined in green, for the guide on making Discord channels.

You make a Discord channel from the plus button beside a category. Pick the type, type a name, and select Create Channel. A category is the folder those channels sit under. Discord’s setup guide calls channels the foundation of how a server is organized.

This is for someone who already has a server and needs rooms for chat, voice, or a staff-only space. You need to be the owner, or have a role with Manage Channels. Discord says that permission is what lets a role create and delete text and voice channels.

What is a Discord channel?

A channel is one room in the server. Discord’s setup guide lists text channels for messages, files, and ongoing chat, voice channels for voice and video, and forum channels for separate posts that do not pile into one conversation. Categories group those rooms. Discord’s category article calls a category an umbrella: the channels under it can share one set of permissions.

If you do not have a server yet, start with How to make a Discord server. The labels that decide who may enter a room are in How to make roles on Discord.

What you need first

  • A server, on desktop or in the browser. The articles below use the desktop channel list.
  • Permission to manage channels, or ownership of the server.
  • A category to put the channel in, if you want it grouped. You can make the category first.
  • Community turned on, only if the new room is a forum.

Create the channel

Discord’s voice-channel article gives two ways. The same plus button is where you pick a type.

  1. Click the plus next to the category the channel should live in.
  2. Choose the type. Voice is the choice in that article. Forum is a choice in the forum article, and only on a community server. Text is the room Discord’s setup guide describes for messages and files.
  3. Type a name.
  4. Select Create Channel.

The other way is to right-click the channel list and create it from there. Discord says a voice channel made that way starts at the top of the list. Drag it onto a category when you want it grouped.

Make a category

Discord’s category article says to right-click the server icon, or click the chevron to the right of the server name, then add the category and type its name. After it exists, drag it to the place you want in the list.

Drag a channel onto that category. Discord asks whether to sync permissions. Sync means the channel copies the category’s permissions. If you skip it, the channel keeps its own rules.

Disabling Read Text Channels & See Voice Channels will make the channels invisible to members that don't have access, rather than just showing them locked!

Text, voice, and forum

TypeWhat it is forWhat Discord requires
TextMessages, files, and a conversation that stays in one roomNothing beyond a normal server
VoiceVoice and video, including the text chat Discord says voice channels can haveNothing beyond a normal server
ForumSeparate posts so topics do not overlapCommunity turned on

Discord’s forum article says to hover the category, press the plus, choose Forum, name it, and press Create Channel. It then offers recommended permissions so you can limit the forum to certain roles or leave it open to @everyone.

Announcement channels and stage channels are not in the create steps on the pages checked for this guide. Do not assume the plus button offers them on a brand-new friends server. The setup guide’s community features are the place to confirm what a community server adds.

Choose who can see it

Hover the channel, click the cog, and open Permissions. By default @everyone can use the channel. Add a role with the plus, then allow or deny each permission.

For a staff category, right-click the category, choose Edit Category, and open Permissions. Turn off view access for @everyone. Add the staff role and allow view access. Discord’s advanced community guide uses that pattern so one team sees a category and the rest of the server does not.

Channels synced to the category follow it. If you change one permission on the channel itself, Discord says that channel is no longer synced and will not pick up later category edits. Open the channel’s permissions and press Sync Now to match the category again.

Who may type at all, before channel permissions matter, is Discord’s verification level. The five levels are in Discord verification level and VaultCord verify.

Where people get stuck

  • There is no plus. You are not the owner, and your role does not have Manage Channels. Discord says that permission creates and deletes text and voice channels.
  • The new voice channel is at the top, not in the category. It was created from a right-click on the list. Drag it.
  • Forum is missing from the type list. Community is not enabled. Discord’s forum article says Community is required.
  • People can still see a “private” channel. View access is still on for @everyone, or the channel is not synced to the category where you set the deny.
  • You muted a category and still see unread dots. Discord says muting a category keeps the unread markers and only drops the notifications. Mute and collapse it if you also want those channels hidden until you are mentioned.

A channel list is easy to lose in a raid or a deleted server. VaultCord can save channels, categories, roles, permissions, and server settings. On Free that backup does not include messages. Messages, up to 350 per channel, start on Premium and Plus. Premium is $4.97 a month and Plus is $9.97, on the upgrade page checked November 6, 2026. People can be added back only if they have verified. Help is where to ask if a restore does something this page does not describe.

How it works

  1. 1Add the category

Right-click the server icon or the chevron by the server name, name the category, and drag it into place.

  2. 2Create the channel

Plus beside that category, pick text, voice, or forum, name it, and press Create Channel.

  3. 3Hide it if it is staff-only

Deny view access for @everyone on the category, and allow it for the role that should see it.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the button to add a channel?

Beside a category, it is the plus. You can also right-click the channel list. Discord says a voice channel created from that right-click starts at the top until you drag it.

Can I group channels?

Yes. Add a category from the server icon or the chevron beside the server name, then drag channels onto it. Discord asks if the channel should sync to the category’s permissions.

Why can’t I make a forum?

Forum channels require Community. Discord’s forum article says to enable Community first, then use the plus on a category and choose Forum.

How do I hide a channel?

Deny “Read Text Channels & See Voice Channels” for the people who should not see it. Discord says that hides the channel instead of showing a lock. Do it on the category if every channel under it should follow the same rule.

Does creating a channel save a copy?

No. The channel exists on Discord. A VaultCord backup is the copy of the channels, categories, and permissions. Messages are not in the Free backup.
