Discord verification level and VaultCord verify

Discord's verification level is the rule that decides when a new member is allowed to type. VaultCord saves the level you picked with the server backup and puts that same level back when the server is restored. The verify link you send members is a different check. One controls chatting. The other builds the list of people you can add back later.

5Verification levels Discord offers
5Minutes an email must be verified, at Medium
10Minutes in the server required at High
1Phone number required, and only at Highest

Discord's verification level article, updated September 19, 2025. Confirm the current wording on Discord's page before you change a live server.

What Discord requires before someone can talk

A verification level is a server-wide rule. People who do not meet it cannot send messages or join voice until they do. It is not a per-channel setting. Administrators and moderators with the right permissions can still talk.

Verification Levels refer to the levels of security a user must meet before they're allowed to send text messages in a channel.

Discord also says a verified phone number on the account skips the other requirements. Someone with a verified phone can talk in a server at any of these levels.

The five levels

On desktop, open the menu beside the server name, then Server Settings, then Safety Setup. Community servers put the same control under Safety Setup, then DM and Spam Protection. On mobile it is Server Settings, then Moderation.

LevelWhat Discord requires before they can talk
NoneNothing. They can chat as soon as they join. Discord says this fits a private server for friends.
LowA verified email on the Discord account.
MediumA verified email that has been verified for more than five minutes.
HighA verified email, a Discord account older than five minutes, and more than ten minutes already spent in your server.
HighestEverything in High, plus a verified phone number on the Discord account.

What VaultCord saves

A VaultCord backup stores the verification level that was set on the server at the time of the backup. When you restore that backup, VaultCord sets the server's verification level back to the saved one, along with the other server settings that were saved with it.

If you change the level in Discord after the backup, a restore of that older backup puts the older level back. Take a new backup after you change it if the new level is the one you want kept.

The member check is separate

VaultCord's verify page is how members join the list you can add back to a server later. It is not Discord's verification level.

You can require a captcha on that page. You can also set a minimum Discord account age, from 0 days up to 3,650 days. Zero turns the age check off. If the account is too new, the member is stopped and the log says how many days old the account is and how many days you required.

After the checks pass, VaultCord gives them the verified role. If the role never arrives, the bot's role needs permission to manage roles, and it has to sit above the verified role.

People who never complete that page are not in the list. A member restore with nobody verified does not add anyone. Post the verify link first.

How it works

  1. 1Set the level in Discord

Choose None, Low, Medium, High, or Highest under Safety Setup. This is who may type.

  2. 2Back up the server

VaultCord saves that level with the server. Restore puts the saved level back.

  3. 3Have members verify

The verify link is separate. It is how you keep a list of people you can add back, with an optional captcha and account age.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Discord documents all five levels and where to change them.
  • A verified phone number skips the email and waiting-time rules.
  • VaultCord saves the level with the server and puts it back on restore.
  • Captcha and minimum account age are optional and separate from Discord's level.
  • Only members who finish verify can be added back later.

Cons

  • The level is server-wide. One channel cannot have its own.
  • Restoring an older backup puts the older level back.
  • The verified role is not applied if the bot's role is underneath it.
  • Members who never open the verify link cannot be added back.
  • Discord's level does not create the VaultCord member list.

Our verdict

Frequently asked questions

What if someone does not meet the level?

Discord says they cannot send messages or join voice until they meet the rule for that level. They can still be in the server.

Does a verified phone skip the other rules?

Yes. Discord says a verified phone number supersedes the email and time requirements.

Can each channel have its own level?

No. Discord says the level applies to the whole server. Channel permissions are the way to hide a single channel.

Does VaultCord's verify page change Discord's level?

No. The page checks captcha and account age if you turned those on, then gives the verified role. The Discord level is the setting saved with the backup.

Why did verify succeed and the role not show up?

The bot has to be allowed to manage roles, and its own role has to be above the role it is giving out.
